Because the nail plate is not living tissue, it cannot repair itself — the thinned section has to grow out and be replaced by new nail growing from the matrix under the cuticle.

That last point is the whole reason recovery takes months rather than weeks. Nothing applied to the surface of a nail can restore thickness that has already been removed. Only new growth does that.

1. The filing that precedes every application. The American Academy of Dermatology describes it plainly: for enhancements to adhere, "the surface of your natural nails must be filed until they feel rough. 4. Never taking a break. The AAD's recommendation is to reserve artificial nails for special occasions, because time without them gives nails a chance to repair. Continuous wear removes every opportunity for that.

What is usually not the cause: the product itself. Gel, acrylic and dip do not eat through nails. The preparation and removal around them are what do the damage.

2. Why Covering It Up Makes It Worse

This is the strongest single piece of advice on this page, and it is the one people most want to ignore.

The AAD's guidance is explicit on both counts: "Do not wear artificial nails to cover up nail problems as they may make them worse", and artificial nails are "not recommended for people who are prone to fungal infections or have brittle nails." It also warns that "covering up brittle, soft, or damaged nails can worsen existing nail problems."

Why the cycle compounds: a thinner nail is a worse foundation, so the new set lifts sooner, so it gets removed sooner or picked at, so the nail thins further. Each round makes the next one shorter-lived.

A note on strengthening polish, since it is the usual fallback. The AAD points out that "polishes that contain strengthening ingredients increase nail stiffness, which may make nails break more frequently." Stiffer is not stronger — a rigid thin nail snaps where a flexible one bends.

4. Leave the cuticle alone. "Do not bite fingernails or remove the cuticle." The cuticle is the seal that keeps bacteria out of the nail fold.

What does not help: buffing the surface smooth, which thins an already thin nail further; strengthening polish, per the note above; and any product claiming to speed up nail growth, which is not something topical products do.

On patience: the single most common reason recovery fails is going back to enhancements at week four because the nails "look mostly fine". At week four the damaged section is still most of the plate.

4. When It Is Not Damage but an Infection

Some of what people call damage is not mechanical at all, and the distinction matters.

Signs it is more than thinning:

Thickening of the nail
Discolouration — yellow, white, brown or green
Lifting of the nail from the bed
Splitting or crumbling at the edge
Pain, swelling, redness or warmth around the nail

The AAD's advice is to check your nails for signs of an infection like nail thickening, splitting, discolouration, or lifting, and to see a board-certified dermatologist if you find any — noting that when caught early, nail fungus may clear with treatment applied to the nail itself. It also states plainly that "nail fungus is better prevented than treated. Treatment can take about a year and often requires prescription medication."

Never share nail-grooming tools, unwashed towels or shoes — the fungi that cause nail and skin infections spread easily between people.
Wear flip flops at the pool and in public showers, and in locker rooms, gyms and spas.
Before a manicure or pedicure, look to see whether staff are sanitising tools and foot baths before each use — and if you do not see it, ask for it.
Treat athlete's foot immediately if it appears, since the fungi that cause it can spread to toenails.

5. Going Back to Enhancements Without Repeating It

You do not have to give them up permanently. You do have to change how you wear them.

Five changes that make the difference:

1. Choose soak-off over file-off. The AAD's recommendation is to choose soak-off gel nails instead of acrylic nails, and to ask for gel that soaks off rather than product that must be filed off. 2. Ask for an LED lamp. The AAD recommends a salon using an LED curing light rather than a UV curing light, since LED emits lower levels of UV radiation and cures faster.

3. Ask the technician to skip cuticle trimming. Also a direct AAD recommendation, and one any good technician will follow without argument.

4. Wear them in stretches, not continuously. Two or three months on, a month off, is a pattern that works. Continuous wear is what produced the damage in the first place.

What Safe Removal Actually Means

Safe removal means separating the product from the nail plate without taking any of the nail plate with it. For soak-off systems that means breaking the surface seal with a file, then dissolving the product in acetone until it lifts away without force. For file-off systems it means filing the product down carefully until only a thin layer remains, then buffing the last of it away. In both cases the defining rule is the same: nothing should ever be pulled, pried, snapped or peeled off the nail.

The test for whether removal was done properly is what your nails look like immediately afterwards. Slightly dehydrated is normal. White patches, visible thin spots, tenderness or a rough, pitted surface are not — they are natural nail that was removed along with the product.

The two rows in bold are the ones that change your decision. Hard gel and poly gel are not porous, so acetone cannot penetrate them. There is no soaking option — the product must be filed away by someone who can see where it ends and your nail begins.

For every soak-off system, the first step is the same and it is not optional: the shiny top layer has to be filed off before acetone can get in. Skipping it is why home removals stall and people start prying.

2. Why Peeling Causes Real Damage

When gel is applied, the nail surface is deliberately roughened so the product grips. That grip is the whole point — and it is also why peeling is destructive.

What happens when you peel: the product does not release from the nail plate cleanly. It takes the top keratin layers with it, which is why a peeled nail looks white, chalky and thin, and why it is often tender to the touch.

Why it compounds: a thinned nail plate is weaker, so the next set is applied to a worse foundation, lifts sooner, and gets peeled again. The American Academy of Dermatology's own framing of the cycle is that "frequent touch-ups can seriously damage your natural nails" — and repeated bad removals accelerate it further.

The filing that precedes application is already a cost. The AAD notes that for artificial nails to adhere, "the surface of your natural nails must be filed until they feel rough. Professional removal is better. But people travel, sets lift at inconvenient times, and the realistic choice is often between a careful home removal and a week of picking. Here is the careful version.

What you need: 100% acetone (not regular polish remover), a coarse file, a buffer, cotton pads, foil, cuticle oil and a wooden or rubber-tipped pusher.

The sequence:

File off the shiny top layer of every nail until the surface is dull. This is the step that determines whether the rest works.
Protect the skin around the nail with a little oil or balm — acetone is very drying.
Soak a cotton pad in acetone, press it onto the nail, and wrap the fingertip in foil.
Wait. Ten to fifteen minutes for gel polish, longer for dip or acrylic. Do not check every two minutes; opening the foil cools it and slows the process.
Push gently. Softened product should slide off with light pressure. If it resists, re-wrap and wait longer.
Buff away any residue lightly, then wash your hands.
Oil and moisturise immediately, and again that evening.

If it needs force, it is not ready. Re-wrap, wait, try again.
Never use a metal tool to lever product off.

An LED lamp rather than UV. The AAD recommends going to a salon that uses an LED curing light rather than a UV curing light, because LED emits lower levels of UV radiation and cures faster.

The American Academy of Dermatology's approach to dandruff is a medicated shampoo — look for one containing zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, sulfur, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole or coal tar, applied and lathered on the scalp, sometimes left for five to ten minutes before rinsing. It is not a diagnosis. The AAD notes that a dermatologist "also knows whether your dandruff is a sign of a medical condition, such as seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, fungal infections of the scalp, or eczema." A cleansing and massage service for the scalp. It typically includes a double cleanse to remove product and oil buildup, a treatment mask or serum matched to your scalp type, a warm rinse, an extended scalp, neck and shoulder massage, and a blow-dry finish. Nothing is cut, coloured or chemically treated — it is a skincare-style service applied to the scalp.

How much does a scalp treatment cost in Las Vegas?

Ours run in three tiers: $95 for the 40-minute Marvelous Reset Ritual, $120 for the 60-minute Marvelous Balance, and $180 for the 90-minute Marvelous Signature Crown Ceremony. The difference between them is time and depth of treatment, not a different type of scalp.

Does a head spa help with dandruff?

It can make a flaky scalp feel better temporarily, but it is not a dandruff treatment. Dermatologists treat dandruff with a medicated shampoo containing zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, sulfur, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole or coal tar, lathered onto the scalp and sometimes left for five to ten minutes. If flaking persists after using one properly, see a dermatologist rather than booking more treatments.

Does a head spa help with hair loss?

No. Scalp massage feels good and a clean scalp is a better environment for hair, but neither treats hair loss. Dermatologists emphasise that most causes of thinning and shedding can be stopped or treated, and that results are better the sooner the problem is addressed — which makes a dermatology appointment the right first step, not a spa one.

How often should I get a scalp treatment?

There is no clinical schedule. Most people who make it a habit come monthly or every six weeks. Because this is comfort and maintenance rather than medical treatment, the right interval is simply the one you will actually keep.

Why is my scalp so dry in Las Vegas?

The climate. Relative humidity here sits below 30 percent for much of the year and falls further on hot afternoons, and dry air pulls moisture out of skin — the scalp included. Direct sun exposure and a long pool season add to it. The same scalp genuinely behaves differently here than it does somewhere humid.

Should I shampoo my scalp or my hair?

Your scalp. Dermatologists specifically name rubbing shampoo into the length of the hair as a damaging habit, and recommend applying shampoo to the scalp and then letting it flow through the length as you rinse rather than working it in. The ends get cleaned on the way out.

How often should I wash my hair?

Based on how often it gets dirty or oily rather than to a fixed schedule. Fine or naturally straight hair and oily scalps generally need washing more often; coarse, curly or coily hair generally needs it less. If your scalp feels oily by the end of the day, wash more often; if hair looks dull or dry, wash less.

Is a head spa the same as a haircut?

No. A head spa involves no cutting, colouring or chemical treatment at all. It is a cleanse and massage for the skin of the scalp. If you want a new cut or colour, that is a hair salon service — this is a different thing entirely.

What Are Wedding Nails, Practically Speaking?

Wedding nails are a manicure chosen for durability and for how it photographs next to a ring, rather than for novelty. In practice that means a long-wearing system such as gel or Gel-X, a neutral or soft finish that does not compete with the ring, a moderate length in a soft shape, and an appointment scheduled two to four days ahead so there is time to fix anything. The constraint that shapes every other decision is that your hands will be photographed in close-up more on this day than on any other.

One implication people miss: ring-finger close-ups mean the cuticle line and the nail shape are more visible than the colour. Precision matters more than the design does.

The single most common wedding-nail mistake is booking the manicure for the morning of. There is no margin. A smudge, a colour that looks different in daylight, or a lifting tip has to be lived with.

The second most common is doing something for the first time in the final week. A first facial, a first wax, a first set of lash extensions — all are fine, but schedule them far enough out that an unexpected reaction has time to resolve.

If you are flying in, work backwards from your arrival rather than the wedding date, and book before you travel. Weekends fill, and a bridal party arriving without appointments in Las Vegas on a Friday is a difficult problem to solve at short notice.

2. Styles That Photograph Well Beside a Ring

The ring is the subject of the photograph. The nails frame it.

The four finishes that consistently work:

Milky nude or sheer pink. The most-photographed bridal finish, for good reason — it reads clean under every lighting condition and never dates.

What tends not to work as well in ring photos: heavy glitter (draws the eye away from the stone), dark colours (can visually shorten the fingers in close-up), large 3D embellishments (throw shadows), and matte finishes (flatten under the warm indoor light common at Las Vegas venues).

On shape and length: almond and squoval are the safest, at short to medium length. If you are wearing a ring you have not worn daily, try it on with the intended nail length before committing — long nails change how a ring sits visually in a photograph.

Gel is the default answer. It photographs with a high gloss, it does not smudge, and it survives the two weeks around the wedding including the honeymoon. Regular polish on a classic manicure looks beautiful for an evening and then chips.

Do not start a brand-new enhancement system in the final week. If you have never worn extensions, a wedding is not the moment to find out how they feel while you are trying to hold a bouquet, sign a licence and eat with cutlery.

4. Building the Whole Appointment: Nails, Lashes, Skin

Most Las Vegas weddings involve one trip, so services stack. The order matters.

Lashes — 3 to 5 days out. Classic sets start at $170, hybrid at $180, volume at $220. A lash lift is $100 and up and a tint $55 and up if you want your own lashes enhanced rather than extended. If you are waxing the face, the American Academy of Dermatology advises avoiding over-the-counter retinol and prescription retinoids for two to five days beforehand, and never waxing sunburned or very sensitive skin. TL;DR

Nevada law does most of the work for you. Files, buffers and emery boards must be single-use, foot spas must stay wet with disinfectant for 10 minutes, and callus blades are banned outright.
A licence must be displayed in plain view. If you cannot see one, that is a finding in itself.
Ask how they clean their tools. Dermatologists explicitly recommend asking, and the answer tells you more than the décor does.
Do not shave your legs before a pedicure. Wait at least 24 hours after instead — this is one of the most common avoidable risks.
If the salon does not look clean, leave. That is the American Academy of Dermatology's own advice, not a matter of being fussy.

Judging a nail salon's hygiene feels subjective, but most of it is not. Nevada publishes specific, checkable requirements, and dermatologists publish specific things to look for. This is those two lists, turned into twelve checks you can actually run.

What Makes a Nail Salon Clean?

A clean nail salon is one where single-use items are genuinely used once, reusable metal tools are disinfected between clients, pedicure basins are cleaned and disinfected after every client with the required contact time, licences are displayed in plain view, and staff wash their hands between clients. In Nevada, all of these are legal requirements rather than best practices, which means you can check them against a published standard instead of relying on how the room looks.

The one thing that is not on that list: how expensive the salon looks. Décor, price and hygiene are independent of each other. A quiet strip-mall salon that follows every rule is safer than an expensive one that does not.

1. Four Things to Check From the Doorway

You can assess these before you sit down or commit to anything.

Check 1 — Is the establishment licence displayed? Nevada's NRS 644A.615(1) requires the holder of an establishment licence to "display the license or a duplicate of the license in plain view of members of the general public." It should not be something you have to ask to see.

Check 2 — Are individual technician licences visible? Technicians are licensed separately from the establishment. Both establishment and individual licences are also searchable by name in the State Board of Cosmetology's public licensee lookup — our licence-checking guide walks through it.

Check 3 — Does the space look and smell maintained? The American Academy of Dermatology's guidance is blunt on this point: "If the salon does not appear clean, then move on." Floors, surfaces, towels and the reception area all count.

Check 4 — Are there dirty tools lying around? The AAD lists "Are there dirty tools lying around?" as a direct question to ask yourself when assessing a salon. Used implements should not be sitting out on tables between clients.

2. Four Things to Check at the Table

Check 5 — Does the technician wash their hands between clients? Also straight from the AAD's list of questions: "Does the nail technician wash her hands between clients?" It should happen in front of you, not out of sight.

Check 6 — Is your file new? This is the single most checkable rule in Nevada. NAC 644A.740(2) lists items that "must not be used on more than one client and must be disposed of after use", including "buffers, cotton balls, cotton strips and swabs, disposable gloves, emery boards, nail files, neck and muslin strips, paraffin liners, makeup applicators, mascara applicators, pedicure slippers, sleeves and sanders."

Read that list again, because it covers more than people expect. Buffers and sanding bands are on it. Pedicure slippers are on it. None of these may be reused on a second client, in any salon in Nevada.

Check 7 — Where do the metal tools come from? Nippers, pushers and clippers are reusable, so they must be disinfected between clients. The AAD's advice is simply to ask: "do not hesitate to ask how they clean their tools." A salon following the rules will answer without hesitation.

Check 8 — Are your cuticles being cut? They should not be. The AAD advises that you "never cut or forcefully push back your cuticles", because the cuticle seals the space between nail and skin against infection. Ask the technician to skip it — a good one will already be pushing gently rather than cutting.

3. Four Things to Check at the Pedicure Chair

Pedicure basins carry the highest infection risk in any salon, and Nevada regulates them in unusual detail.

Check 9 — Is the basin cleaned and disinfected after every client? NAC 644A.735(2) sets out the full sequence after each client: drain the basin, remove all visible debris, clean the surfaces with soap or detergent, rinse, drain again, and then "disinfect the surfaces of the foot spa with a disinfectant according to the manufacturer's directions on the label of the disinfectant and ensure that the surfaces remain wet with the disinfectant for at least 10 minutes."

That 10-minute number is the detail worth remembering. Disinfectant that is sprayed and immediately wiped away has not done the job the regulation describes. If a chair turns over in under a couple of minutes between clients, the required contact time did not happen.

Check 10 — Is a liner being used, and is it new? Disposable basin liners are common and make the turnaround genuinely quick and safe. A liner should be opened in front of you. The AAD also advises checking that "the pedicure foot-baths and filters are thoroughly disinfected before you use them."

Check 11 — Are pedicure slippers new? They are on the single-use list in NAC 644A.740(2), the same as files and buffers.

Check 12 — Are you the right candidate for a pedicure today? Open cuts, sores, athlete's foot or an active infection mean waiting. This protects you and everyone after you.

4. Tools Nevada Salons Are Not Allowed to Own

This is the check most people have never heard of, and it is the sharpest line in the whole regulation.

Nevada's NAC 644A.805(1) states that establishments "shall not have the following devices within the licensed areas", including "skin cutting equipment, including razor-type callus shavers, credo blades, rasps or graters and other implements which are used to remove corns or calluses by cutting below the skin surface."

Note the wording: not "shall not use" — "shall not have." The ban is on possession. A callus shaver sitting in a drawer is a violation even if it never touches a client.

What legitimate callus treatment looks like instead: a chemical softener, soaking, and a file or pumice working on the surface of the skin rather than cutting below it. It is slower and it works. Our callus treatment is a $10 and up add-on to a pedicure.

If you are ever offered a blade for calluses in Nevada, decline and leave. There is no version of that offer that is compliant.

5. What to Do Before, During and After Your Appointment

Some of the risk is on your side of the chair, and it is easy to manage.

Before:

Do not shave your legs beforehand. The AAD is specific: "Shave your lower legs after getting a pedicure, not before", and recommends not shaving for at least 24 hours before. Freshly shaved skin has micro-abrasions that give bacteria a route in.
Reschedule if you have cuts, sores or an active infection on your hands or feet.
Bring your own tools if you prefer. Any reasonable salon will use them.

During:

Ask for a new file if you did not see one opened. It is a normal request and a legal requirement.
Ask them to skip the cuticle trimming.
Say something if a tool hurts. Pain during a manicure or pedicure is information, not something to sit through.

After:

Watch for redness, swelling, warmth or pus around a nail in the following days, and see a doctor if it appears.
Do not cover up a nail problem with enhancements. The AAD warns: "Do not wear artificial nails to cover up nail problems as they may make them worse", and notes they are not recommended for people prone to fungal infections or with brittle nails. Moisturise. Dry, cracked skin around the nail is itself an entry point.

One more thing worth knowing about polish claims: the AAD notes that "polishes that contain strengthening ingredients increase nail stiffness, which may make nails break more frequently." Strengthening polish is not automatically the answer to weak nails.

How do I know if a nail salon is clean?

Check whether licences are displayed in plain view, whether your file and buffer are new and opened in front of you, whether the technician washes their hands between clients, whether metal tools come out of a disinfection process, and whether the pedicure basin was cleaned and disinfected after the previous client. In Nevada all of these are legal requirements, so you are checking against a published standard rather than a feeling.

Are nail files reused in salons?

They must not be. Nevada's NAC 644A.740(2) requires that emery boards, nail files, buffers, sanders, pedicure slippers and several other items are not used on more than one client and are disposed of after use. If a file is pulled from a communal pot rather than opened, ask for a new one.

How long should a foot spa be disinfected between clients?

Nevada requires that after each client the basin is drained, visible debris removed, surfaces cleaned with soap or detergent, rinsed and drained again, and then disinfected so the surfaces stay wet with the disinfectant for at least 10 minutes. A spray-and-wipe turnaround does not meet that standard.

Are callus shavers legal in Nevada nail salons?

No. NAC 644A.805(1) says establishments shall not have razor-type callus shavers, credo blades, rasps, graters or other implements used to cut below the skin surface within the licensed areas. The ban covers possession, not just use — the tool may not be on the premises at all.

Should I shave my legs before a pedicure?
