The answers are not the same.

What a Salon Can Repair on a Toenail

A nail salon can repair a toenail that is split, chipped, cracked or partially torn, provided the nail is otherwise healthy and still firmly attached to the nail bed. The repair bridges the damage with a thin layer of gel or acrylic resin and a fabric wrap, then shapes and polishes over it until the damaged section grows out. A salon cannot treat infection, fungus, a detached nail, or bleeding — those are medical problems.

The dividing line in one sentence: if the problem is the shape of the nail, a salon can help; if the problem is the health of the nail or the skin under it, a doctor should see it first.

1. The Four Kinds of Toenail Damage

1. A clean break or chip at the free edge. The most common and the easiest. The nail is intact where it matters and a piece has come off the end. Usually this just needs filing back and polishing — often no repair product at all.

2. A split running back toward the cuticle. Repairable in most cases. A thin resin-and-wrap bridge stops the split travelling further while it grows out. This is the repair people mean when they ask the question.

3. A partial tear, where part of the nail has lifted from the bed. This is the boundary case. If the lifted part is small, dry, and painless, we can usually trim and seal it. The AAD's guidance for a hanging nail is to gently trim away the part not connected to your skin — but if it is painful or the skin beneath is raw, we stop.

4. A crushed, bruised or blackened nail. Not a salon job at all. See the next section.

How this differs from fingernails. Toenails grow roughly half as fast — a damaged toenail can take six to twelve months to grow out, against three to six for a fingernail. That means a toenail repair has to survive much longer, and it is why we are more conservative about what we will cover than we would be on a hand. 2. What We Can Do in the Chair and What It Costs

Repairs are quoted in person rather than listed on the menu. That is not evasion — a single chip and a nail split to the bed are genuinely different amounts of work, and we would rather look at it than commit to a number that turns out to be wrong. Timing note for a trip: a toenail repair wants to be done two to three days before you travel, not the morning of. The bridge needs to cure fully and it is worth having a day in hand to adjust it. Our guide to nails for a Vegas trip covers the wider timing.

One thing we will not do. Nevada prohibits salons from even possessing razor-type callus shavers, credo blades, rasps or graters — skin cutting equipment used to remove corns or calluses by cutting below the skin surface is banned under NAC 644A.805. If a nail problem is tangled up with hard skin or a corn, we will treat the skin the legal way and refer the rest.

3. When It Is a Doctor's Job, Not Ours

We will decline a repair and say why in any of these cases. This is not caution for its own sake.

See a doctor if:

• The nail is black or purple — that is usually blood under the nail
• Blood covers more than half the nail
• The injury is particularly painful, or you cannot bend the toe
• The nail is lifting off the bed across a wide area
• There is pus, heat, spreading redness, or a smell
• The nail is thickened, crumbling, or yellow-brown across its whole width

The AAD lists the first four as reasons to see a dermatologist directly: if you can't bend your finger or toe; if blood covers more than half your nail; if your nail is black or purple; or if your injury is particularly painful.

The last one on our list is fungus, and it matters here because covering a fungal nail with polish or acrylic makes it worse — you are sealing a warm, dark, moist environment over an organism that thrives in exactly that. It also spreads to the other toes. A salon cannot diagnose it and should not paint over it.

What to do at home in the meantime. The AAD's own first-aid guidance is simple: gently clean the wound using soap and water, then apply petroleum jelly to keep your wound moist and then cover with gauze. One specific warning is worth repeating because people get it wrong: do not put sticky products on your nail — an adhesive bandage stuck directly to the nail plate can pull it further when removed.

4. Does a Full Set Include Toes? No

This comes up constantly and the answer is the same at every salon we are aware of.

"Full set" means ten fingernails. It is an enhancement term — a full set of acrylic, Gel-X, hard gel or poly gel, applied to the hands. Toes are never included in it. Our full set explainer covers the term in detail.

5. Acrylic on Toenails: The Honest Answer

People ask for this for two reasons: to add length for a specific event, or to cover a damaged or short nail bed. The second reason is the common one.

It is possible. It is usually not what we would recommend. Here is why, plainly:

• Toenails grow slowly, so an acrylic toenail stays on much longer than a fingernail would before the regrowth line becomes obvious. That is a long time for a sealed surface to sit on a nail.
• Shoes. A toenail spends its life in a closed, warm, humid environment being pressed against something. That is the worst possible setting for an enhancement, and lifting at the edges is far more likely than on a hand.
• Lifting is the actual risk. Once an acrylic toenail lifts even slightly, moisture gets underneath and stays there. The AAD is direct about the underlying principle for nails generally: keep them clean and dry, because bacteria and fungi thrive in a moist environment.
• It hides the nail. If you are covering a damaged nail, you also stop being able to see whether it is getting better or worse.

What we suggest instead, in order:

1. Repair and polish. A resin bridge plus gel colour conceals a great deal and lets the nail breathe and grow.
2. A gel pedicure at $68+, which includes the soak-off and removal. Gel is thinner than acrylic and less prone to trapping moisture.
3. Shorter and neater. A well-shaped short toenail in a good colour looks better than a long artificial one on almost everyone.
