Almond nails taper to a soft rounded point that slims fingers. See short almond ideas, the best length for your nails, which products hold the shape and prices.
`Almond nails` are a shape that suits almost every hand, from short natural nails to long extensions. This guide explains what makes a true almond, how it compares with other shapes, which length and product to choose, and design ideas that look good for weeks.

Almond nails are filed so the sides narrow gradually from the base toward the tip and finish in a soft, rounded peak, similar to the outline of an almond. The shape lengthens the look of fingers and is less sharp than stiletto, so it suits both natural nails and extensions.
What makes a good almond. The sides should be symmetrical, the taper should start around the middle of the free edge, and the tip should be rounded rather than pointed. If the point is sharp, it is drifting toward stiletto. If the sides stay wide all the way up, it is closer to oval.
Why it flatters. The narrowing sides draw the eye up the finger, so even short almond nails make hands look slimmer and longer.
| Shape | Tip | Look | Strength on long nails | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Square | Flat, straight edge | Bold, classic | Strong | Short nails, French tips |
| Oval | Fully rounded | Soft, natural | Moderate | Short natural nails |
| Almond | Tapered, soft rounded point | Elegant, slimming | Moderate to good | Short to long; most hands |
| Coffin | Tapered, flat tip | Dramatic, modern | Good with extensions | Medium to long sets |
| Stiletto | Tapered, sharp point | Very dramatic | Weakest at the tip | Long extensions, statement looks |
Our nail shapes guide compares almond, coffin and stiletto in depth, and our short and medium nail shapes guide is useful if you want to keep length practical.
Short almond. Filed from natural nails that extend just a few millimetres past the fingertip. It is the easiest almond to live with: low-snag, office-friendly, and works with a classic or gel manicure.
Medium almond. About a quarter to a half of the nail bed length beyond the fingertip. Natural nails can hold it if they are strong; otherwise a builder gel overlay or Gel-X adds support.
Long almond. A dramatic, elongated taper. Best done with extensions, because the narrow sides concentrate stress near the tip.
| Length | Good on natural nails? | Best product |
|---|---|---|
| Short | Yes | Gel manicure or classic polish |
| Medium | If nails are strong | Gel manicure, builder gel or Gel-X |
| Long | Rarely | Gel-X, hard gel or acrylic |
Natural nails too short? You need a little free edge to file an almond tip. Our how long do gel nails last guide explains how gel helps nails grow out without chipping, and our BIAB nails guide covers builder gel for strengthening.
The tapered shape gives designs a natural "frame." Popular almond looks at our salon include:

The narrow tip is the weak point, so a little care goes a long way:
If a tip breaks, do not glue it at home. Our broken nail repair guide explains the options.
Almond nails are filed so the sides taper gradually from the base to a soft, rounded point, like the shape of an almond. The shape makes fingers look longer and slimmer and works on short natural nails as well as long extensions.
Oval nails stay wide and are rounded evenly across the tip. Almond nails narrow more on the sides and finish in a softer, more defined peak. Almond looks a little more elongated and dramatic, while oval is the most natural, low-key rounded shape.
Yes. Short almond is one of the most flattering shapes for short nails because the tapered sides make fingers look longer. You need a small free edge past the fingertip to file the point; a gel manicure helps natural nails hold the shape for 2–3 weeks.
Both shapes taper, but almond ends in a soft rounded point while stiletto ends in a sharp point. Almond is more practical and less likely to snap; stiletto is more dramatic and usually needs extensions such as Gel-X, hard gel or acrylic.
Long almond nails can break more easily than square because the narrow tip concentrates stress. Short or medium almond, a slightly wider tip, and a strong product such as hard gel, Gel-X or acrylic make breaks much less likely.
At our salon, almond is priced as a shape other than square, which adds $10 to the base service. For example, a gel manicure is $55 + $10, and a Gel-X full set is $79 + $10. Add-ons such as French tips or chrome are priced separately.
