What are BIAB nails? Builder in a Bottle is a brush-on builder gel that strengthens natural nails. Compare BIAB with gel, acrylic and Gel-X, plus wear time.
`BIAB nails` started as a UK salon trend and many clients now ask for "BIAB" by name in the US too. This guide explains what it actually is, how it compares with gel polish, acrylic and Gel-X, who it suits, and how to get the same result in Las Vegas.

BIAB nails are natural nails coated with Builder in a Bottle, a brush-on builder gel made by The GelBottle Inc. It is thicker than gel polish, cures under an LED or UV lamp, and forms a flexible, strengthening overlay that helps short or weak nails grow without breaking.
A brand name that became a category. On its own blog, The GelBottle describes Builder in a Bottle™ as a soak-off builder gel brushed on in thin layers and cured as a strengthening overlay, and lists versions such as Hard BIAB, HEMA Free and an All In One formula with 50% less HEMA. Today, "BIAB" is often used loosely for any builder gel applied from a bottle with a brush, much as people say "Gel-X" for soft gel extensions.
What makes it different from gel polish. Gel polish is thin and mostly decorative. Builder gel has a thicker, self-levelling consistency, so the technician can shape an apex, a gentle curve over the stress point of the nail, that spreads impact and reduces breaks.
Time. Expect roughly 60–90 minutes, depending on nail art. Our nail appointment length guide gives timings for every service.

In short: if you want colour, choose gel polish. If you want stronger natural nails at their own length, choose builder gel. If you want length, choose acrylic, hard gel or Gel-X. Our gel vs acrylic guide and builder gel vs hard gel guide go deeper.
Good fit:
Not the best fit:
Protect your skin under the lamp. The American Academy of Dermatology's gel manicure tips recommend a broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen on your hands, or dark fingerless gloves, during any gel service.
Wear. Builder gel overlays usually last around 3 weeks before regrowth at the cuticle needs attention. Fingernails grow about 3.47 mm per month on average, according to a 2010 growth-rate study, so after three weeks the gap is clearly visible.
Two maintenance options:
Do not peel it off. Peeling builder gel tears away layers of natural nail and can leave the white, rough patches described in our white spots on nails guide. Our safe nail enhancement removal guide explains the correct process.
What we offer. Our published menu lists Hard Gel (full set with gel polish, $79; fill, $69) as our strength-building gel enhancement, plus Gel-X and poly gel for length. We do not list a separate "BIAB" service, so if you want a BIAB-style natural nail overlay, mention it when you book and we will talk you through the options.
Questions to ask any salon offering BIAB:
Our builder gel nails near me guide covers what to expect at a Las Vegas builder gel appointment.
BIAB stands for "Builder in a Bottle." It is a trademarked builder gel made by The GelBottle Inc, applied with a brush from a polish-style bottle. The term is now commonly used for any brush-on soft builder gel.
BIAB is better for strengthening weak natural nails because it is thicker and can be shaped into a supportive arch. Gel polish is thinner and mainly adds colour. If your nails break before reaching the length you want, builder gel is usually the better choice.
Every BIAB product is a builder gel, but not every builder gel is BIAB. BIAB is one brand's builder gel in a bottle; many other brands sell builder gels in bottles or pots that are applied in a similar way.
A BIAB or soft builder gel overlay usually lasts about 3 weeks. After that, regrowth at the cuticle needs an infill or the overlay should be soaked off and reapplied. Wearing gloves for chores and using cuticle oil helps it last.
Builder gel itself is designed to protect natural nails, but heavy filing, peeling it off, or poor removal can thin the nail. Professional removal, gentle prep and occasional breaks keep natural nails healthy under an overlay, along with daily cuticle oil.
Only a little. Builder gel can extend the natural nail by a few millimetres at most, and longer free edges are more likely to lift or snap. For noticeable length, choose Gel-X, hard gel or acrylic extensions instead; at our salon Gel-X and hard gel sets are $79.
