Gel on toes lasts far longer than gel on hands, which changes the maths entirely. Real wear times, our prices, removal costs and who should skip gel.
`Gel pedicure` draws a lot of Las Vegas searches and very few clear answers, mostly because the honest comparison is different from the one people expect. Here it is.

A gel pedicure is a pedicure finished with gel polish rather than regular lacquer. The foot care is identical — soak, nail trimming and shaping, cuticle care, callus work, exfoliation and massage — and only the final colour differs. Gel is applied in thin coats and cured under a lamp between each, producing a hard, fully dry finish that typically lasts four to six weeks on toes. Regular polish air-dries and holds its finish for one to two weeks.
The key point that gets lost: gel is a finish, not a different service. You are not getting a better pedicure, you are getting a longer-lasting colour on the same pedicure.
This is the fact that changes the whole comparison, and most guides skip it.
Toenails grow far more slowly than fingernails. Fingernails grow roughly three times faster. That alone means the regrowth line at the cuticle takes much longer to become visible.
Your toes do almost nothing. Hands open doors, wash dishes, type, handle keys and are in water constantly. Toes are inside shoes. There is no equivalent mechanical stress.
No repeated water immersion. The AAD notes that too much water exposure can weaken your nails, causing them to split, peel, or break — and hands get far more of it than feet. The AAD's separate guidance on gel manicures covers the trade-offs of the finish itself.
The result:
| Hands | Toes | |
|---|---|---|
| Regular polish | 3–5 days | 1–2 weeks |
| Gel polish | 2–3 weeks | 4–6 weeks |
That gap is why the value calculation flips. On hands, gel roughly triples the wear time. On toes, it roughly triples a much longer baseline, and you end up in a completely different maintenance rhythm.
Our gel pedicure page covers our own service, and the gel manicure guide covers the hands version for comparison.

Cost per week, which is the comparison that matters:
Gel wins on toes on pure arithmetic. It does not win on hands nearly as clearly, which is why the same advice does not transfer between the two.
The dry-time advantage is underrated. Regular polish on toes is soft for the better part of an hour and can dent inside a shoe well after that. Gel is hard when you stand up, which matters if you are going straight somewhere. Our pedicure price guide has the full tier list and what a pedicure includes covers the service itself.
Gel on toes must be soaked off in acetone. It does not wipe away, and it does not chip off cleanly the way regular polish does.
Why this matters more on toes than on hands: toenails grow slowly. Damage to a fingernail grows out in a few months; the same damage on a big toenail can take the better part of a year. A rushed or forced removal is therefore a much longer-lived mistake.
What a proper removal looks like: the surface is buffed lightly, acetone is held against the nail for 10 to 15 minutes, and the softened product is gently pushed away. Nothing is pried, scraped hard, or peeled.
Never pick gel off your toes. Peeling takes layers of the nail plate with it. The AAD is explicit that with artificial nails, the surface of your natural nails must be filed until they feel rough. This thins your natural nails, making them weaker — and peeling compounds that.
Our soft gel pedicure at $68 and up includes the soak-off, which is worth knowing because removal is frequently a separate charge elsewhere. If you are adding gel colour to a spa tier for $20, ask what removal will cost at your next visit so there is no surprise. Our safe removal guide covers the technique for each system.
Plan the exit before the entry. If you know you want a colour change in three weeks, gel is the wrong choice — you will pay for a removal to get there.
Skip it if you have any nail infection or suspect one. Discoloured, thickened or crumbling toenails need a diagnosis, not a coat of colour over the top. The AAD's guidance on nail fungus treatment covers what actually works, and it notes that once you have had one nail infection, you are more likely to get another. Sealing a suspect nail under gel for six weeks does not help.
Skip it if your toenails are thin, soft or already damaged. Give them a season bare with oil instead. On toes, "a season" is genuinely how long recovery takes.
Skip it if you change colour often. Every change means a removal.
Skip it if you have diabetes or reduced circulation in your feet without checking with your doctor first. Foot care in that situation is a medical matter, and gel makes it harder to see what is happening underneath.
Skip it for a two-night trip. Regular polish on toes holds a week or more, which is plenty, and it costs nothing to remove.
Take gel if: you want colour that outlasts a holiday, you are in open shoes all summer, you dislike the dry-time window, or you simply do not want to think about your toes for a month. Our pedicure aftercare guide covers keeping either version looking right.

The honest tier guidance: the difference between tiers is time, products and how much massage is included — not the quality of the nail work, which is the same throughout. If you want the colour to last and nothing else, the soft gel pedicure at $68 is the efficient choice. If you want the hour, go up the tiers.
One thing that should be identical at every price point: hygiene. Nevada requires that after each client, a foot spa is drained, cleared of debris, cleaned with soap, rinsed, drained again and disinfected — and that the salon ensure that the surfaces remain wet with the disinfectant for at least 10 minutes under NAC 644A.735(2). Nevada salons also may not so much as possess razor-type callus shavers, credo blades, rasps or graters under NAC 644A.805(1). If you see one, leave — regardless of what you are paying.
And the safety line that applies to every pedicure: the AAD advises that you never cut or forcefully push back your cuticles, because the cuticle seals the nail against infection. Our salon checklist covers the rest of what to watch for.
Four to six weeks on toes, compared with one to two weeks for regular polish. Gel lasts roughly twice as long on toes as it does on hands, because toenails grow more slowly and toes are subject to far less wear.
On toes, usually yes. A soft gel pedicure at $68 worn for five weeks works out around $14 a week, against about $34 a week for a $48 classic pedicure worn for ten days. The exception is if you change colour often, since every change requires a removal.
Only the finish. The foot care — soak, trim, shape, cuticle care, callus work, exfoliation and massage — is identical. Gel is cured under a lamp and lasts four to six weeks; regular polish air-dries and lasts one to two.
Gel colour is a $20 add-on to any of our spa pedicure tiers, which run $80 to $180. Our soft gel pedicure is $68 and up and includes soak-off. The classic pedicure is $48.
Not when applied and removed properly. Damage comes from picking the gel off or from a rushed removal, both of which thin the nail plate. On toes that matters more, because toenails grow slowly enough that damage can take most of a year to grow out.
Buff the surface lightly, hold acetone against the nail for 10 to 15 minutes, then gently push the softened product away. Nothing should be pried or peeled. Our soft gel pedicure includes soak-off in the price.
No. Discoloured, thickened or crumbling toenails need a diagnosis and treatment, not colour sealed over the top for six weeks. See a dermatologist first.
About 15 minutes longer than the same pedicure with regular polish, so 55 to 65 minutes for a classic-style service and 75 to 105 minutes for the spa tiers. The advantage is that you leave with it fully dry.
The nail work is the same across every tier — the difference is time, products and massage. If you only want the colour to last, the soft gel pedicure at $68 is the efficient choice. If you want the hour, go higher up the list.
