Dip vs acrylic nails compared: Las Vegas prices ($68+ each), how long each lasts, length options, removal, hygiene and which one suits your nails.
`dip vs acrylic`, `dip powder vs acrylic nails` and `which is better dip or acrylic` are common questions from people choosing their next set. Both are durable, both start at the same price on our menu, and they suit quite different goals.

Dip nails are made by brushing a bonding liquid onto the nail and applying coloured powder in layers, then sealing with an activator and top coat; no lamp is needed. Acrylic nails are sculpted from a liquid monomer mixed with polymer powder, which hardens in the air into a strong extension that can be filed to any length and shape.
In short: dip is mainly a durable colour system for natural nails, with tips if you want some length. Acrylic is an extension system designed for building length and shape.
| Dip powder | Acrylic | |
|---|---|---|
| How it is applied | Bonding liquid plus powder layers | Liquid monomer plus powder, sculpted |
| Lamp needed | No | No |
| Best for | Natural length, long-lasting colour | Length, dramatic shapes |
| Length | Natural, or tips for extra | Any length |
| Feel | Thin to medium, hard | Thicker, rigid |
| Odour | Mild | Stronger |
| Fills | Typically redone as a new set | Fills every two to three weeks |
| Removal | Soak-off, often after filing the top | Soak or file |
Durability. The AAD's dip powder manicure guide notes that with dip "you can have chip-free nails for up to four weeks," and that it is so tough "You literally cannot bite or pick off this nail color." Acrylic is also very durable and can be maintained with fills for as long as you like.
Nail biters. The same AAD article quotes a dermatologist who recommends durable manicures such as dip for some patients because it "can help a patient stop biting or picking at their nails."

We do not double dip. The AAD explains: "When you dip your nails into a container that other people have dipped their fingers into, you are double dipping. If someone who had a nail infection or wart already dipped their fingers into these containers, you can pick up these germs."
The AAD's safe methods: the technician must either pour each powder into a disposable container and throw away what is left, or sprinkle powder from the original container onto your nails. Ask how powder will be applied before you start, anywhere you go.
Allergy check for dip. The AAD notes some people react to dip products, with "Adhesives, which are used to hold the powders in place" as "the main culprit." If you have sensitive skin, its dermatologists suggest trying one dip nail first.
Acrylic ingredients. The FDA's nail care products page explains that acrylics are typically made with ethyl methacrylate monomer and polymethylmethacrylate. In the early 1970s, the FDA removed products containing 100 percent methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer after injury complaints, but "No regulation specifically prohibits the use of methyl methacrylate monomer in cosmetic products." Ask your salon what system it uses. The FDA also advises: "Make sure to have good ventilation."
Never peel or pick either one off. Both bond firmly, and pulling can strip layers of natural nail.
Dip removal typically means filing the top layer, then soaking in acetone until the powder softens. Acrylic removal is typically a soak or careful filing.
The trade-off. The AAD notes dip "can be tough on your nails" and its artificial nails guidance explains that for acrylic, the natural nail is filed until rough so the product sticks, which thins it. Breaks between sets help nails recover.
Leave cuticles alone. The AAD's dip guidance warns that cutting or pushing back cuticles "can lead to a serious infection" and suggests asking your technician to leave them alone. Our cuticle care guide explains the difference between a tidy-up and cutting.

It depends on your goal. Dip suits natural-length nails with long-lasting colour; acrylic suits length and dramatic shapes and can be filled.
At Marvelous Nails & Lashes, dip is $68+ on natural nails and $78+ with tips. An acrylic full set is $68+ and a fill is $58+.
The AAD says dip can stay chip-free for up to four weeks. Acrylic can be maintained much longer with fills every two to three weeks.
Neither is risk-free. Dip can be tough on nails, and acrylic involves filing the nail surface. Gentle prep, safe removal and breaks between sets matter most.
Dipping your nails into a powder jar others have used. The AAD warns it can spread infection. We do not double dip.
Dip is typically redone as a new set rather than filled. Acrylic is designed to be filled every two to three weeks.
Dip with tips ($78+) adds some length. For long or dramatic shapes, acrylic is usually the better choice.
Dip is typically filed on top and soaked off; acrylic is soaked or carefully filed. Never peel either one off.
Tell us your preferred length and shape, and whether you have an existing set to remove, so we can reserve the right time.
