TL;DR

  • The standard tip for a nail tech is 15–20% of the service price, the same range the Emily Post Institute lists for manicurists.
  • On our menu, that means about $5–$7 on a $35 classic manicure, $8–$11 on a $55 gel manicure and $7–$9 on a $45 classic pedicure.
  • Tip on the full service price, including add-ons such as French, chrome or nail art, and on the pre-discount price if you used a promotion.
  • 20% or more is a kind gesture for long, detailed or last-minute appointments.
  • If something is wrong, say so before you leave. A fix is more useful to you than a smaller tip.

`How much to tip a nail tech` and `how much to tip for a pedicure` are some of the most common questions first-time salon clients ask. This guide gives you a clear percentage, real dollar amounts based on our Las Vegas menu, and simple etiquette for add-ons, discounts and group visits.

How Much Should You Tip a Nail Tech?

In the United States, the customary tip for a nail technician is 15–20% of the service price, paid to the person who did your nails. Tip on the full price before discounts, include add-ons in the total, and lean toward 20% or more for long, detailed or rush appointments.

Where the number comes from. The Emily Post Institute's general tipping guide lists "Manicurist | 15-20%" in its salon and spa chart, the same range it gives for hair stylists, facials and waxing.

Tipping is changing, but salon tipping is steady. In a November 2023 Pew Research Center survey, 72% of U.S. adults said tipping is expected in more places than it was five years ago. Personal care is a long-standing exception to that debate: in the same research, 78% of adults who get haircuts said they always or often tip for them.

1. Tip Amounts by Service Price

Here is what 15%, 18% and 20% look like on real prices from our service menu. Round to the nearest dollar if that is easier.

Service (our price)15%18%20%
Classic Manicure ($35)$5.25$6.30$7.00
Classic Pedicure ($45)$6.75$8.10$9.00
Gel Manicure ($55)$8.25$9.90$11.00
Gel Pedicure ($65)$9.75$11.70$13.00
Acrylic full set ($68+)$10.20$12.24$13.60
Gel-X full set ($79)$11.85$14.22$15.80
Signature Deluxe Pedicure ($80)$12.00$14.40$16.00
Milk & Honey Pedicure ($135)$20.25$24.30$27.00
Marvelous CBD Luxury Pedicure ($180)$27.00$32.40$36.00

Quick maths: to find 20%, move the decimal one place left and double it. On a $55 gel manicure, $5.50 × 2 = $11.

Minimum tip. On very low-priced services, such as a $10+ cuticle trim or a $25+ polish change, many people tip a flat few dollars rather than a strict percentage. That is a courtesy, not a rule.

2. How Much to Tip for a Pedicure

Tip 15–20% for a pedicure, the same as a manicure. Pedicures take longer and involve more physical work, so many clients tip toward the top of the range.

  • Classic pedicure ($45): about $7–$9
  • Gel pedicure ($65): about $10–$13
  • Spa pedicures ($80–$180): about $12–$36, depending on the tier

Our spa pedicures include extras such as callus treatment, hot stone massage and paraffin, which add time. If you are comparing tiers, our spa pedicure guide explains what each one includes, and how much a pedicure costs in Las Vegas breaks down the full price range.

3. Tipping on Add-Ons, Gel and Long Sets

Tip on the final service total, add-ons included. Add-ons often take as much skill as the base service.

Add-on (our price)What it addsTip guidance
Classic French ($15+)Hand-painted tipsInclude in your total
Chrome or cat eye ($25+)Extra layers and curingInclude in your total
Nail design ($5+)Freehand artInclude; tip more for detailed art
Shape other than square (+$10)Extra filing and shapingInclude in your total
Take-off with service ($15+)Safe removal of old productInclude in your total

The full list is on our nail add-ons price list.

Discounts and gift cards. Tip on the original price, not the discounted one. Your technician did the full service.

Fills. Tip 15–20% on the fill price, the same as any other service. A fill can take nearly as long as a new set, as our nail fill vs full set guide explains.

4. When to Tip More, Less, or Speak Up Instead

Consider tipping 20% or more when:

  • Your appointment ran long because of detailed nail art or a complex design
  • Your technician fitted you in at short notice or stayed late
  • You brought a difficult repair, such as a broken nail, to fix during the visit
  • You are a regular and want to say thank you

Speak up instead of tipping less. If a nail is uneven, polish smudged, or something felt uncomfortable, tell your technician before you pay. Most issues can be fixed in minutes. Pew's 2023 survey found that 77% of adults say service quality is a major factor in how much they tip, so it is reasonable to adjust if a problem is not resolved. Talking first gives everyone a fair chance.

Never tip less because of the price list. Prices are set by the salon, not your technician.

5. Tipping Etiquette Checklist

Use this quick checklist before you pay:

  • [ ] Work out 15–20% of the full price, including add-ons
  • [ ] Use the pre-discount price if you used a promotion or gift card
  • [ ] Tip each technician separately if more than one worked on you
  • [ ] Ask the front desk whether you can add the tip to a card or should leave cash
  • [ ] Raise any problems before you leave so they can be fixed

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do you tip a nail tech?

The standard tip for a nail technician in the United States is 15–20% of the service price. On a $35 classic manicure that is about $5–$7, and on a $55 gel manicure about $8–$11. Tip toward 20% or more for long or detailed work.

How much should you tip for a pedicure?

Tip 15–20% for a pedicure, the same as a manicure. That is about $7–$9 on a $45 classic pedicure and $10–$13 on a $65 gel pedicure. For spa pedicures priced $80–$180, the tip ranges from about $12 to $36.

Do you tip on the price before or after a discount?

Tip on the original, pre-discount price. Your technician performed the full service, so the tip should reflect its full value. The same applies when you pay with a gift card or a promotional offer, because the technician's time and skill did not change.

Should you tip on nail art and add-ons?

Yes. Include add-ons such as French tips, chrome, cat eye and nail designs in the total before working out your tip. Detailed nail art takes extra time and skill, so many clients tip toward 20% or more.

Is it rude not to tip at a nail salon?

In the United States, tipping nail technicians is customary and most clients tip. If you were unhappy with the service, the better option is to tell your technician before paying so they can fix the problem, rather than leaving without a word.

Do you tip for a nail fill?

Yes. Tip 15–20% of the fill price, just as you would for a new set. Fills involve removing grown-out product, rebalancing the nail and refinishing, which can take nearly as long as a full set. On a $69 Gel-X fill, that is about $10–$14.
